The Jungle is a Living Organism
The jungle gives us so much without us realizing it, and we can take it for granted. As the jungle embraces us when we live and eat under her protection, we need to return what she gives to us. Unfortunately there are people in the area whose activities are destroying the jungle bit by bit. Stealing from it the valuable wood and burning it down for agriculture. MOST OF THIS IS DONE ILLEGALLY.
We see the jungle of Llucanayacu as more than a collection of rivers, trees and mountains. We see it is a living entity, and it needs our help. We can heal its wounds with reforestation.
We are very aware that our little organization cannot protect the whole Amazon, but we can work with Urku Runa to protect this area and reforest where we can. In the future we might be able to do more.
Status December 2007:
We are analyzing the situation and making a plan, probably in corporation with an aid organization. We have to understand the driving forces behind these criminal acts and the political situation that allows these illegalities. We will work together with Urku Runa to make a plan of reforesting the area where we can, with the best mix of plants and trees.
Status August 2008:
The locals organization managed to stop an Italien businessman by the name Dominique in buying up more land for destruction. The locals worked together with a lawyer in Tarapoto to get the foreigner to leave this area. Kuntur Journeys and Urku Runa have initiated the project to reforest the trees used for the contruction times 100. The reason for "times 100" is that the quality wood we have used takes at least 100 year to grow again and by planted 100 new trees in a number years we will reach the point of break even.
